Message from Your Chapter President - January 2021

"Practice makes perfect." We've all heard it. The phrase is centuries old tracing back to its origins in Latin. This sentiment, in some form, shows up in every language. In Dutch it is, "Practice gives birth to art." A rough translation from Mandarin is, "Practice gives birth to skill."

Perfection is not the point of this phrase. Perfection is not really the goal. Sir Winston Churchill said, "They say that nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I wish they'd make up their minds." He also said, "Perfection is the enemy of progress'. There is a great article by Ami Ostman in Psychology Today which quotes the Chesterton phrase for its title, "Anything Worth Doing is Worth Doing Badly"

But I digress. There is an old French phrase that translates, "It is by forging that one becomes a blacksmith."
The focus of this ancient advice is on practice. C.S. Lewis said, "No one can teach riding so well as a horse." Nike says, "Just do it."
Practice is about action, about repetition, about persistence.

"That which we persist in doing becomes easier, not that the task itself has become easier, but that our ability to perform it has improved.", Ralph Waldo Emerson.
"You can practice shooting eight hours a day, but if your technique is wrong, then all you become is very good at shooting the wrong way. Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise.", Michael Jordan.

Practice is the focus and the goal is to improve, to learn a skill, to use that skill, to succeed.

"Super-successful people aren't the most gifted people in their fields. They just work, study and practice more than the competition.", Jack Canfield.

We are planning an exciting year. There will be opportunities for you to build the fundamentals, learn a new skill, hone your craft, or work with us to promote and build the BA community in Calgary.
Learn, grow and share.

"Success isn't something that just happens - success is learned, success is practiced and then it is shared.", Sparky Anderson.

Share your success with us this year as well grow together in 2021.

Mike Jones,
President
