to Honor International Women's Day - March 8th

This month's message brought to you by your Chapter Communications Portfolio

Did You Know? International Women's Day is annually held on March 8 to celebrate women's achievements throughout history and across nations. It is also known as the 'United Nations (UN) Day for Women's Rights and International Peace'. This year's theme is, "Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world", and "celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic". (1)

Are You Aware? More women than men have been impacted with job loss during this pandemic. "The report, COVID-19 and gender equality: Countering the regressive effects (2), from McKinsey Global Institute, estimates that women make up almost two-fifths of the global labour force but have suffered more than half of total job losses from the crisis, that's left them 1.8 times more vulnerable to the pandemic's impact than men". (3) Added to this violence against women and girls has increased and intensified as shown by "emerging data and reports from those on the front lines". (4)

What Can You Do? Educate yourself about what you can do to make a change for the women in your world! IIBA® is celebrating women in Business Analysis by hosting a panel webinar with women of influence on International Women's day. (See Registration information included elsewhere in this newsletter.)

Is There a 'Woman of Choice' in Your Life? My life is full of wonderful women who encourage me, love me, and befriend me. For this I am truly grateful, although I probably don't tell them how grateful and how much I appreciate them often enough! My # 1 'woman of choice' though, would be my mother...

An Interview with one of our Sponsors

IT|IQ Tech Recruiters - Jason Hamilton, Account Executive

& our Chapter Vice President, Reg Cracknell

Reg Cracknell Question:  How have you seen the practice change over the last year?

Jason Hamilton Response: During our partnership with IIBA® Calgary Chapter over the last couple of years I’ve seen an amazing group of leaders in the business analysis space come together to help grow the practice in the Calgary Information Technology Ecosystem.

Some of the items that have gone a long way in our opinion are the events, (e.g., Professional Development Day and Lunch & Learns), where you can see lots of Business Analysts from various backgrounds come together to share their experiences and learn together. This plays a major factor as it helps our ecosystem diversify and focuses on the various challenges and topics that will help the city and province move more into a Technology Hub in Canada and to not just be known for the Oil & Gas industry.

On top of that there are many different certifications that International Institute of Business Analysis™ (IIBA®) now offers and have added throughout the years such as the following:

  • Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®),
  • Entry Certificate in Business Analysis™ (ECBA™),
  • Certification in Business Analysis (CCBA®),
  • Agile Analysis Certification (IIBA®-AAC),
  • Certification in Business Data Analytics (IIBA®-CBDA), and;
  • Certificate in Cybersecurity Analysis (IIBA®-CCA).

IT|IQ is very proud to be part of this movement and to help share our experiences in the IT job market and help Business analysts fine tune their abilities to be better recognized with resume tips, LinkedIn tips, as well as advice on current market needs from our clients that we work with across the country.

Reg Cracknell Question:  What positive outcomes have you seen from the above approach?

Jason Hamilton Response:  With the community coming together to help each other it will help the city of Calgary and the technology ecosystem grow organically and boost the economy in the longer scheme of time. Additionally, with adding more certifications that are specialized it will help business analysts in a very competitive market make themselves stand out as we find that organizations are looking for individuals that are specialized when it comes to IT even on the business side of projects and initiatives.
