5 Minutes with...Your IIBA® Calgary Chapter Board Member

Introducing Your Chapter Director of Events:  Suzan Darwish

What motivated you to volunteer with IIBA® Calgary Chapter?

  • I just recently received my CBAP®, and was super motivated to get more involved in the BA Community. While talking to a past co-worker, he mentioned that there was an opening for a volunteer position for the IIBA® Calgary Chapter, without hesitation I put my name forward and the rest is history!

What value does your Board position/portfolio provide to our Chapter members?

  • As a Business Analyst, it's important to stay on top of what new tools, techniques, and tricks are out there to help BAs help their stakeholders meet their needs. Organizing webinars, conferences, and socials brings Business Analysts together to share their knowledge and experiences with other fellow BAs.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

  • In 2017, I went to Morocco with a few friends, and it was the best experience and vacation that I have ever had. The culture, the weather, the beaches, the food, and the people were all around great! I try not to visit the same place twice, but Morocco, there i just so much to see and experience, I will for sure go there again!

What book/podcast would you recommend to our members?

  • I recommend that everyone watch Amy Cuddy's Ted Talk, "Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are". This talk helped me prepare for interviews, large workshops, and even day to day interactions with stakeholders. This talk makes you aware of your own body language and non verbal queues so that you come across more confident, approachable, and trust worthy. All characteristics of a great Business Analyst!

What tip, trick, or advice can you suggest that will help your fellow BAs succeed?

  • Plan, plan, plan and document! Plan for every meeting you have, whether small or large. Know what you want to get out of your meeting, and know how you are going to get it. Then document everything, it can be as simple as an email, or full on formal document! A successful Business Analyst is always prepared, organized, and ready to answer any questions that may come up regarding the work they are involved in.
