May is for Mental Health and Meaningful Communication
Prioritizing Mental Wellness
May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a timely reminder that wellness isn’t just about physical health, but about how we think, feel, and function every day.
As business analysts, we often shoulder high expectations while navigating tight deadlines, complex stakeholder relationships, and ever-evolving project demands. It’s important to acknowledge when we feel overwhelmed—and to know we’re not alone.
In Calgary and Southern Alberta, there are several local mental health resources available to support you:
211 Alberta – Call or text 2-1-1 for 24/7 access to mental health and community support services.
Distress Centre Calgary – 24-hour crisis support at 403-266-HELP (4357) or www.distresscentre.com
Canadian Mental Health Association – Calgary – Workshops, peer support, and wellness programs at www.cmha.calgary.ab.ca
This month, we also want to give a heartfelt shout out to the amazing mothers in our chapter and beyond. Your nurturing care—whether gently guiding a child or thoughtfully guiding a project—profoundly contributes to the mental and emotional well-being of those around you.
Thank you for everything you do, both at home and in your professional roles as business analysts. You are seen and appreciated.
If you’re feeling isolated or overwhelmed, please don’t hesitate to reach out—to a loved one, a friend, a colleague, or a professional. Mental wellness is not a solo journey.
Strengthen Your Voice with Toastmasters
Clear, confident communication is one of the most important skills a business analyst can develop—whether you’re facilitating a workshop, conducting requirements-gathering sessions, or reporting to executive stakeholders. And yes, even those unplanned watercooler conversations deserve your best self.
One of the best ways to refine your speaking skills in a supportive environment is by joining Toastmasters. It’s more than just public speaking—it’s about building confidence, learning how to think on your feet, and becoming a compelling storyteller in your everyday professional life.
I invite you to explore the PMI-SAC Toastmasters Club, a group that bridges project management and business analysis professionals in a fun, growth-minded setting. If you’d like more information or are curious about visiting a meeting, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly at president@calgary.iiba.org.
In Closing, let’s take care of our minds and voices this May—both are vital tools in our journey as business analysts.
Reg Cracknell,
President
